Submitting Content to Google

Google’s crawlers automatically search for new content, but waiting for them can delay your visibility. To fast-track this process, use Google Search Console, a free tool that lets you manage how your content interacts with Google.

How to Submit a Sitemap

  1. Log in to Google Search Console: If you haven’t already set up your account, start by verifying your website ownership.
  2. Navigate to the Sitemap Section: In the left-hand menu, click “Sitemaps.”
  3. Submit Your Sitemap: Enter the URL of your sitemap, usually found at yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml. Submitting a sitemap ensures all your site’s pages are indexed efficiently.

Submitting Individual Pages

Sometimes you need a specific page to rank quickly—like a new blog post or landing page for a campaign. Use the URL Inspection Tool in Search Console:

  1. Copy and paste your page URL into the URL inspection bar.
  2. Click “Request Indexing.” This tells Google to prioritize crawling and indexing this page.

Tracking Performance

Once your content is live and indexed, it’s vital to track how it performs. This helps you understand what resonates with your audience and where you can improve. Google Analytics is an invaluable tool for this.

Key Metrics to Monitor

  • Visitor Demographics: Learn about your audience—age, location, and interests—to tailor future content.
  • Time Spent on Pages: High time-on-page suggests engaging, valuable content. Low numbers might indicate the need for better structure or more compelling information.
  • Bounce Rate: This measures how many visitors leave after viewing a single page. A high bounce rate could signal irrelevant or underwhelming content.
  • Conversion Rates: Track how often visitors take desired actions, like signing up for a newsletter or making a purchase.

Using Insights to Improve

Tracking isn’t just about numbers; it’s about action. For example:

  • If your page has a high bounce rate, consider improving the call-to-action or adding more engaging visuals.
  • Low time-on-page might mean you need to break up dense text with headings, images, or interactive elements.
  • Conversion issues could suggest unclear CTAs or a lack of trust-building elements like testimonials.

Learning Activity

  1. Submit a Page to Google Search Console: Choose a page from your website (like a blog post or a product page). Use the URL Inspection Tool to request indexing.
  2. Monitor Performance in Google Analytics: Over the next week, check key metrics such as bounce rate, time on page, and conversions.
  3. Record Your Observations: Create a list of insights from your tracking. What worked? What could improve? Brainstorm one actionable change you can implement to optimize performance.
